Today I made a scarf using a new sticky Sulky Solvy
AND IT WAS SO MUCH EASIER!
(And so much more expensive.)
I bought a roll of this awhile ago using a half-price coupon, but since it was so expensive I was saving it. But last night I used up the last of the regular Solvy, so I gave this a try. It's
wonderful. All the little fabric and yarn snippets stay right where you
put them, and you don't have to pin it all together.
It's called STICKY FABRI-SOLVY. Here's the link: http://www.sulky.com/stabilizers/stickyfabrisolvy.php
The stitching went SO much faster since I didn't have to keep stopping to remove safety pins. And this product has a heavier, fabric-like feel that makes it a lot easier to control under the needle than the flimsy regular Solvy.
It took longer to rinse out, but most of the stickiness was still gone in less than five minutes. I squeezed it in a towel, hung it up to dry and it was ready to wear in no time.
The only downside I can see is the price. My 12"-wide, 6-yard roll was priced at $29, and I use 60" per scarf. That's only 3 1/2 scarves per roll, or about $8 a scarf. (Don't hold me to this -- I'm doing these calculations in my head and rounding numbers.) I'll need another half-off coupon before I buy more.
Have a colorful day
I love how these come out! I'm wondering if you could use some of the temporary spray adhesive on the regular solvy instead of buying the more expensive sticky version? Might be worth a try!
ReplyDeleteI love Solvy scarfs. I wonder if you really have to sandwich the materials if it is sticky. Could you sandwich with something like tissue paper that would wash away. Just a thouht. Marybeth
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments! I thought about using the temporary spray, and I still may give that a go on the regular Solvy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that I'd want to wash dissolved tissue paper down our drain because we're on a septic system and that might clog it up.
Hmmmm... wonder how stitching over toilet paper would work? That would at least dissolve in the septic system. But it could also put a lot of lint in the sewing machine!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Sherrie, as usual! Love that vibrant red. Wonder if a glue stick could take the place of the pins holding those tiny pieces? I use glue sticks for temporary holds when organizing my "bohemian style" applique--I end up with too many battle scars if I use pins!!
ReplyDeleteThe scarves are fantastic, but I think I would rather buy one than make one. I have boxes of hand dyed scarves and I only have one neck. lol
