Sailboat races every Thursday

Go Sheila!

Every Thursday evening in Gig Harbor throughout the summer you can take part in -- or just watch -- sailboat races that start at Jerisich Dock at 6:30. My friend Sheila, above, came in 2nd place last week in one of the new Open Bics. (Photo credit goes to Michael Mordue.)

With the record heat wave coming our way this week, the races just might be the place to be to catch a little breeze off the water. Here is the info Sheila sent me about the races:

"Gig Harbor Yacht Club sponsored In-Harbor Sailboat Races continue through the summer on Thursdays starting at 6:30 p.m. off Jerisich Dock and are open to all area sailboaters with boats of any size and type. Membership in GHYC is not required and boaters do not need a rating; one will be assigned. Just sail by the committee before the start to register."

Also, this summer for the first time the GHYC is offering Learn to Sail lessons in Gig Harbor Bay for children aged 8-18 in July and August in their new Open Bic sailboats (like the one in the photo). See their web site at  http://www.ghycjuniorsail.org/  for a $40 discount coupon and to register.

Keep Cool!
